Professional dispositions are behaviors expected of any professional person and are critical in the development of teachers. Basic dispositions are evaluated in a variety of classes directly related to teaching in schools. Students evaluate their developmental stages by choosing 1 of 4 behaviors for each disposition that best describes them. This evaluation assists students in learning about expectations needed for becoming successful teachers and working toward developing those behaviors. In addition, it is required by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

Praxis I and II Resources

The article, “Winning strategies for passing Praxis I and II”, published in the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance is authored by Dr. Linda Rikard and Ms. Luanne Norden, members of the PHED Faculty. It is presented here for your use in preparing for these two important exams leading toward BSED status and licensure respectively.

Professional Organizations:

The Virginia Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (VAHPERD) is the state association that represents our field of study. Membership applications are located at this site.

The American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) is the national association that serves the needs of professionals in physical education, recreation and related areas. Offices are located in Reston, VA.

The National Association of Sport and Physical Education (NASPE), is one of seven organizations that make up AAHPERD. NASPE’s focus is to promote and advocate physical education for all students.

Government Agencies:

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is a site with current statistics and other useful information related to health and physical activity.

The President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sport houses the President’s Challenge used by children and adults alike for tabulating their physical activity levels. Other interesting and useful information on national fitness is presented.

General Health and Physical Education Sites:

PE Central (pecentral.org) is a website for Health and Physical education teachers with many lesson plans and teaching tools.

PE 4 Life (pe4life.com) is designed to inspire active, healthy living by advancing the development of quality, daily physical education programs for all children.
