Sport Management focuses on the preparation of professionals qualified to operate sport organizations, including private enterprises, government or public employment settings, non- profit or voluntary agencies, and commercial ventures.
Professional preparation develops capable sport management specialists able to apply creative communication, leadership, and managerial skills in an array of positions in the sport industry, including sales, marketing, public relations, operations, facilities, and event management.
Sport Management has developed rapidly as a field of study, and with it, the number of professional preparation programs has grown. However, competition for available positions in the sport industry has undergone comparable growth. Therefore, quality professional preparation in sport management is essential as a competitive advantage in the employment marketplace.

Sport Management Expanded Mission
The Sport Management degree program serves the Northern Virginia community, the Commonwealth, the Mid-Atlantic region, the nation, and the world through advancing the sport management knowledge base by conducting both theoretical and practical research that is relevant to diverse stakeholders. Additionally, interdisciplinary study and teaching promotes the development of ethical leadership and provides opportunities for students’ career advancement. The utilization of innovative instruction fosters interactive learning. Extensive partnerships and collaborative projects enhance a diverse community of students, faculty and industry stakeholders in their quest to become productive change agents addressing the continual challenges facing all segments of the sport industry.
Sport Management Program Description
Through the School of Recreation, Health, and Tourism, students pursue the Sport Management concentration in the Bachelor of Science degree in Health, Fitness, and Recreation Resources. George Mason University’s Sport Management program serves one of the nation’s most diverse student populations. Dynamic, growing, and committed to excellence, the Sport Management program seeks to develop students’ professional knowledge, skills, and dispositions through a curriculum guided by North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM) and the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA) content standards. An integral part of the Sport Management curriculum includes vast opportunities for multiple field experiences in sport settings in the Northern Virginia region, the greater DC metro area, and throughout the world.
